The board of township trustees carries out orders prescribed for it by the electors assembled at a township meeting, either annual or a special meeting. The trustees are the legislative arm of the township. The trustees set policy and procedures for the township supervisor to administer. Also, they have some duties that they must carry out as ordered directly to them by the Illinois General Assembly.
To be eligible for the office of township trustee, a person must be a legal voter of the township and have lived in said township for at least one year prior to his or her election or appointment to the office of township trustee (60 ILCS 1/55-5).
Any person appointed to fill a vacancy in the Board of Trustees shall be a member of the same political party (Democrat) as the person vacating the office if the person vacating the office was a member of an established political party, as defined in Section 10-2 of the Election Code, that is still in existence at the time the appointment is made. Such appointee shall establish his or her political party affiliation by his or her record of voting in party primary elections or by holding or having held an office in a political party organization before appointment.
The deadline for submitting applications for the current vacancy on the Vernon Township Board of Trustees will be: Monday, January 9th, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. Any applications submitted after that date will not be considered.
