Low Income Energy Assistance Program

We will be accepting applications in the fall for low income families for the 2023-2024 Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The applications will be accepted by appointment only at Vernon Township beginning in the fall. Appointment times vary. We will continue to take appointments as long as the grant money is available.

Required Documents

Please bring original documents for the following (no copies):

  • Current electric and gas bill (if you pay gas). Utility bill must be in applicant's name or name of head of household and within 30 days of appointment date
  • Rental lease or Lake County Housing Agreement
  • Social Security card for each member of the household
  • Proof of income for the last 30 days, i.e. wages, Social Security, SSI, unemployment, child support or any other source of income. Acceptable income documentation:
    • 2023 to 2024 Social Security award letter
    • AABD letter, if receiving
    • Unemployment - copy of payment detail screen
    • Current bank statement showing direct deposit
    • Pay check stubs
  • Medicaid cards for each person that receives Medicaid

Any household member 18 and over claiming zero income must provide documentation (such as school records, food stamp letter, or medical disability application), and fill out a zero income affidavit.
